What is a Auto/Car Mechanic?

A car mechanic is someone who specializes in repairing and maintaining cars. They may work for a dealership, or do repairs on their own time. A mechanic usually has at least an associate's degree in automotive technology or mechanics, but many have higher degrees as well. Mechanics typically need to pass a certification exam from the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) before they can call themselves certified professionals.

What qualifications are required to become a Auto/Car Mechanic?

1. Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required to become a auto/car mechanic, although some states require an associate’s degree or technical certification from an accredited program.

2. Certification: Many employers and professional organizations require their mechanics to have certification in order to be called “professional”. The most common certification for auto/car mechanics is the National Automotive Technician Program (NATEP). Other certifications that may be necessary include the Master Mechanic Institute (MMI) Certified Automobile Service technician credential and the International Council of Technical Experts in Auto Repair (ICTEAR)Certified Vehicle Technicians certificate.

At minimum, many employers prefer employees who hold a NATEP automotive service technician certificate because it demonstrates competency in repairing both domestic and imported vehicles on all types of engines using basic tools and techniques including diagnostics; however, other certificates are also acceptable depending upon company policy specific training requirements as well as experience level of those applying for certain positions such as lead tech 2nd gen certified car mechanic position with over 10 years expierence at large dealership

3-5 years hands on experience wrenching on cars & trucks – preferably working on older models where more problems can occur due to lack modern technology being installed originally
