A biomedical engineer is a scientist who specializes in the design and analysis of medical devices, such as implants or prosthetic limbs. A biomedical engineer may also work on projects related to cancer research, genetic disorders, or heart disease.
1. A degree in biomedical engineering is required for most positions, but some employers may accept a certification or an equivalent experience level.
2. Typical training programs include undergraduate and graduate study at accredited universities and departments of engineering, as well as hands-on laboratory experience working on real projects related to medical devices or therapies.
3. Many current biomedical engineers work in research and development roles where they are responsible for developing new technologies or methodsologies used in the field of healthcare delivery, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis (see careers overview below).
4. Biomedical engineers must have excellent problem solving skills; they often need to be able to develop detailed designs that meet specific needs while taking into account potential risks associated with their project goals/objectives.
