What is a Body Massage Therapist?

A body massage therapist is a person who provides therapeutic massages to people. They may be certified by organizations such as the National Board for Certification in Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork or American Massage Therapy Association. Somebody who gives out massages without any certification might also call themselves a "massage therapist." A body massage typically involves rubbing, kneading, tapping and other motions on the recipient's skin with pressure designed to help relieve pain, tension or stress.

What qualifications are required to become a Body Massage Therapist?

A body massage therapist must have a license from the state in which they will be practicing. They may also need certification through one of the national bodies that offer certifications for therapists, such as The National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCTMB). In addition, many schools require students to complete an accredited program before becoming certified. Finally, most employers prefer therapists who are experienced and have undergone appropriate training.

What are the skills required to become a Body Massage Therapist?

1. Must have a minimum of an associate's degree in massage therapy or related field

2. Experience working with clients who are overweight/obese is required

3. Knowledge of anatomy and physiology is necessary to treat patients correctly

4. Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with other health professionals such as doctors, nutritionists and physical therapists is essential

5. Demonstrated experience providing bodywork services including Swedish, deep tissue, prenatal care and sports massages
