What is a Butcher?

A butcher is someone who cuts and prepares meats for consumption. They may also sell meat products out of their business. A butcher typically has a high school diploma or equivalent, although some enter the trade without any formal training.

What qualifications are required to become a Butcher?

A butcher must have a valid State Meat Inspection Certificate. They must also pass a criminal background check and provide documentation of their good health to work as a Butcher. A butcher must be at least 18 years old, possess manual dexterity in the hands, eyesight correctable to 20/20 with glasses or contacts lenses, and excellent oral communication skills.

What are the skills required to become a Butcher?

1. The ability to identify and assess carcasses for quality, tenderness and suitability for slaughtering.

2. The knowledge of animal anatomy and physiology that is necessary to make humane decisions about cutting meat from the carcass.

3. A high level of manual dexterity and precision in handling knives, saws, cleavers etc., as well as strong working sensesight/hearing skills. 4 Strong business acumen – being able to understand financial projections relating to product sales; understanding retail markup schemes; knowing how much money a Butcher should be making on average per day basis 5 Having passion for what they do - having a genuine interest in both animals & their meat
