What is a Chiller Technician?

A chiller technician is a person who specializes in maintaining and operating chillers. They may work for companies that produce ice or refrigeration products, or they may be self-employed. A chiller technician typically has a degree in engineering or another technical field, as well as experience working with chilled water systems. They must have knowledge of safety procedures and the mechanics of chillers, as well as strong math skills to understand mechanistic equations associated with cooling processes.

What qualifications are required to become a Chiller Technician?

1. A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent is required to become a Chiller Technician.

2. Candidates must be able to read and understand technical drawings and specifications, have good problem-solving skills, be mechanically inclined, have experience working with computersized equipment, and possess basic knowledge in refrigeration theory.

3. Additional qualifications may include certification from the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) as an Electrician III or higher; apprenticeship training; experience operating large electrical machinery; knowledge of regulatory requirements pertaining to chilled water systems; excellent communication and customer service skills; ability to work independently under pressure/time constraints.; familiarity with safety procedures for handling refrigerants
