A Chiller Technician is a person who repairs, maintains and operates chillers. They may also be responsible for training other technicians in the use of chillers.
A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent is required to become a Chiller Technician. Additionally, many states require technicians to obtain certification through an accredited program. Often, technical training programs include coursework in mathematics, physics and chemistry. In some cases, employers may also require technicians to have experience working with computers and mechanical systems.
1. Dexterity and hand-eye coordination to operate various machinery
2. Knowledge of refrigeration principles and practices
3. Strong math skills, including algebra and calculus, in order to calculate fluid flow rates or temperatures accurately
4. Verbal communication abilities necessary for explaining technical procedures or troubleshooting problems with equipment
5. Mechanical aptitude – the ability to understand how machines work
