What is a Compressor Mechanic?

A compressor mechanic is a technician who repairs, maintains and operates compressors. They may work in manufacturing plants or oil refineries. A compressor mechanic typically has an associate's degree in mechanical engineering or another technical field. They will need to have knowledge of compression technology and the mechanics of compressors. The compressed air they use can be very dangerous if not handled correctly so the compressor mechanic must be appropriately trained for these duties as well

What qualifications are required to become a Compressor Mechanic?

1. A compressor mechanic must have experience working with compressors and air tools.

2. They should have a high school diploma or equivalent, and hands-on knowledge of compression equipment.

3. Certification from an approved organization is required for many positions, such as the National Compressor Technician Training School (NCATS).

4. Mechanical aptitude and good problem solving skills are important; candidates must be able to read schematics and understand how machines work mechanically in order to diagnose problems correctly.

5. Some employers may require certification from The Institute of Industrial Engineers (IEE) or American Society of Heating, Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).
