What is a Counsellor?

A counsellor is a mental health professional who provides counselling and therapy to individuals or groups. They work with clients to help them deal with their problems, but also encourage positive change. Counsellors may specialise in different areas such as depression, anxiety, relationship issues, addiction recovery, etc.

What qualifications are required to become a Counsellor?

1. A degree in counselling from a recognized university or college is required.

2. Experience as a counsellor is also desirable, although not essential; however, professional registration with the Canadian Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (CACP) is advisable for those wishing to practice in Canada professionally.

3. Good communication and interpersonal skills are paramount, as counselling clients often come seeking support and understanding rather than advice or solutions to specific problems.

4.. Individuals must be able to maintain confidentiality of all conversations with their clients - this includes any information shared during sessions that doesn’t directly pertain to therapy progress/outcomes – unless given explicit permission by the client(s).

5.. Finally, being compassionate and empathetic towards others- both inside and outside of work – will definitely set someone apart from the competition when applying for positions as a counsellor
