What is a Counsellor?

A counsellor is a professional who helps people deal with problems and difficulties in their lives. They may offer advice or support on issues such as personal relationships, work, health or finances. Counsellors can also provide therapy sessions to help individuals resolve underlying Issues that are causing them distress.

What qualifications are required to become a Counsellor?

1. A minimum of a Master's degree in Counselling Psychology is required to become a counsellor, although some states may require an additional credential such as licensure or certification.

2. Many counselling positions also require experience working with individuals and families, providing support through counseling sessions, and possessing strong communication and organizational skills.

3. Counselors typically work in private practice settings or within mental health institutions/clinics.

4. The National Association of Professional Therapists (NAPT) offers several certifications that can assist counselors in their career choice, including the Certified Clinical Mental Health Specialist (CCMHS), Licensed Marriage & Family therapist (LMFT), Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Practitioner – Psychotherapy (APRN-P).

5. In order for counsellors to be effective practitioners, they must have expertise in both cognitive-behavioural therapy techniques and interpersonal psychotherapy modalities

2. Having a broad range of counselling skills, including assessment, diagnosis and treatment planning.

3. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to build strong relationships with clients over time.
