A fire alarm technician is a person who installs, maintains, and monitors fire alarms. They may also be responsible for responding to emergency calls related to fires.
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has guidelines for who should become a fire alarm technician. The requirements include having an associate degree or higher in electrical engineering, science, technology, and/or related field from an accredited college or university; two years of experience as a certified firefighter with the ability to work independently; passing the NFPA 70 EMT exam; and being licensed by either state government or the NFPA.
1. Possess basic alarm installation and wiring knowledge
2. Have experience using fire detection equipment, such as smoke detectors, heat sensors or water sprinklers
3. Be familiar with commonly used software for managing alarms and security systems
4. Understand the principles of fire behavior and be able to identify potential sources of ignition in a building
5. Know how to use common tools associated with monitoring fires
