What is a Fire Alarm Technician?

A Fire Alarm Technician is a person who installs, maintains and tests fire alarms. They may also be responsible for investigating fires that have been caused by alarm systems.

What qualifications are required to become a Fire Alarm Technician?

1. A high school diploma or equivalent is required for most positions as a Fire Alarm Technician.

2. Experience with alarm systems and troubleshooting is preferred, but not necessary.

3. Must be able to read and write in English well enough to communicate with firefighters during emergency situations and repairs/troubleshooting on the fire alarm system(s).

4. Knowledge of electrical wiring principles is also helpful, though not mandatory for all positions as a Fire Alarm Technician (eLTC).

5. Certification from an accredited certification body such as The National Electrical Code® Association (NECA) or American Society of Heating, Refrigeration & Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), etc., may be beneficial in certain instances
