What is a Furniture / Joinery Draftsman?

A furniture/ Joinery draftsman is someone who specializes in creating accurate drawings of pieces of furniture and other decorative objects. They may also be responsible for designing the actual object itself, ensuring that all aspects of the design are executed to perfection. A draftsperson typically has a degree in architecture or engineering, as well as experience working with wood and metal fabrication tools.

What qualifications are required to become a Furniture / Joinery Draftsman?

1. A degree in furniture or joinery drafting is required.

2. Experience working with a CAD program, such as AutoCAD or Revit is advantageous.

3. Skill in using basic tools and hand measurements are necessary for success as a draftsman including saws, chisels and hammers/nails etc..

4. Strong attention to detail is essential; Draftsmen must be able to visualize their designs before they begin drawing them out on paper- this entails being very creative and having excellent spatial reasoning skills!

5. Working knowledge of wood species (eccentricities, moisture content...) and construction methods(wood screws vs nails...) are also important prerequisites for the position

What are the skills required to become a Furniture / Joinery Draftsman?

1. Good understanding of furniture construction and joinery principles

2. Solid drafting skills including use of cross-sections, perspective drawings and plans

3. Knowledge of common tools used in the trade such as straight lines, rulers, saws etc.

4. Ability to work quickly under pressure with accuracy required for precision cuts
