What is a Gynaecologist?

A Gynaecologist is a doctor who specialises in women's health. They can diagnose and treat illnesses and injuries affecting the reproductive system, including problems with fertility, menstrual cramps, ovarian cysts and more.

What qualifications are required to become a Gynaecologist?

1. A qualifying medical degree in gynaecology is required.

2. Additional qualifications may include experience as a doctor and/or specialised training in gynaecological surgery or obstetrics & gynecology.

3. Gynaecologists usually have sub-specialty certification, such as pelvic floor specialist, endometriosis expert etc., which can be useful for certain patients or treatments.

4 They must also be registered with the relevant professional body (in the UK this is The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists). This ensures that they are up to date with best practice and fully capable of delivering high quality care to their patients .

5 Finally, many require ongoing continuing education to stay current on latest advances in their field

What are the skills required to become a Gynaecologist?

1. The ability to assess and diagnose medical conditions of the female reproductive system, including disorders such as infertility, PCOS, endometriosis and ovarian cancer.

2. Knowledge of techniques used in gynaecological surgery including hysterectomy/myomectomy (removal of the uterus), salpingo-oophorectomy (surgical removal of ovaries), dilation and curettage (D&C - a procedure involving breaking open the wall between two adjacent wombs through which menstruation flows) etc.

3. Experience managing women’s health during pregnancy from pre-conception testing to postnatal care with an emphasis on breastfeeding support for mothers who choose to nurse their children exclusively or partially breastfeed them; establishment and management of lactation therapy programmes when necessary

4 Expertise in diagnosing sexually transmitted infections – both bacterial STIs like chlamydia infection as well as viral ones like genital herpes – during routine gynecological examination screenings

5 Demonstrated experience working collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams
