What is a Gypsum Carpenter?

A gypsum carpenter is a tradesman who uses gypsum to build walls and ceilings. Gypsum is a type of soft, lightweight mineral that can be easily shaped into blocks or shapes with hand tools.

What qualifications are required to become a Gypsum Carpenter?

1. A Gypsum Carpenter must have a valid certification from the National Board of Home Inspectors

2. They must be able to read and understand blue prints

3. They must be able to use hand tools safely and proficiently including saws, hammers, chisels and drills

4. Knowledge in construction principles is essential as well as safety precautions when working with gypsum board or plaster walls

5. Must be physically fit for prolonged work hours

What are the skills required to become a Gypsum Carpenter?

1. The ability to read and understand blue prints or other construction drawings.

2. Strong math skills, including the ability to solve problems using fractions, decimals and percentages.

3. Skilled hand-eye coordination – gypsum is a very fine material that requires precise work with tools such as saws and chisels.
