A Heavy Equipment Mechanic is a professional who maintains and repairs heavy equipment, such as bulldozers or backhoes. They may also work on construction sites, performing tasks like installing new sidewalks or repairing drainage systems. A Heavy Equipment Mechanic typically holds a degree in engineering or mechanics, and must have experience working with heavy machinery in order to be qualified for the job.
1. A high school diploma or equivalent is required, and certification from the National Board of Examiners for Occupational Safety and Health (NBEH) in Heavy Equipment Mechanics is preferred.
2. Experience operating heavy equipment is a must; apprenticeship programs are available through many employers. 3. Familiarity with computer-aided drafting/design software is essential for designing parts and machines, as well as troubleshooting malfunctions 4. Strong math skills are necessary to calculate speeds, loads, distances, etc., 5 . Excellent problem solving abilities are essential
