What is a Lighting Technician?

A lighting technician is someone who installs, repairs and maintains all types of lighting fixtures in a commercial or institutional setting. They may also be responsible for set design and production. A Lighting Technician typically holds a college degree in engineering, technology or business related to the field of lighting. The majority of Lighting Technicians are employed by large companies such as JCPenney, Target, Home Depot etc., but there are also smaller independent firms that specialize in this type of work

What qualifications are required to become a Lighting Technician?

-High school diploma or equivalent

-Two years of experience as a lighting technician or electrician

-Good understanding of electricity and wiring principles

-Knowledge in the use of light fixtures, controllers, and other equipment used in theatrical productions.
