A pharmacist is a health professional who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment and management of diseases and medical conditions through medication. Pharmacists also provide information on drug therapy to patients and their families. They work with other healthcare professionals to ensure that patients have access to quality medications.
A Pharmacist must have a degree in pharmacy from an accredited school. They also need to pass the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) Certification Exam.
The skills required to become a pharmacist vary depending on the pharmacy school you attend and the specific program requirement. However, typically pharmacists require an undergraduate degree in chemistry, biology or another related science; PharmD degrees are also available. After completing your undergraduate studies, you will likely need to complete one year of residency training before being eligible for licensure. In addition, many pharmacists hold certification from professional organizations such as American Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties (ABPS) or National Association of Boards of Nursing (NABN).
