What is a Pipe Fitter?

A pipe fitter is a tradesperson who assembles, installs, repairs and maintains pipes. They may also work with other mechanical equipment in order to supply water or gas for buildings.

What qualifications are required to become a Pipe Fitter?

A Pipe Fitter must have a high school diploma or equivalent, and experience in the installation of pipe systems. They must also be proficient with hand tools, including wrenches, screwdrivers and hammers. A Pipe Fitter may need certification from an organization such as The National Board for Certification in Plumbing and Mechanical Engineering (NBCME).

What are the skills required to become a Pipe Fitter?

1. A knowledge of pipefitting and piping systems

2. The ability to read plans and drawings

3. The ability to use a variety of tools, including hand drills, saws, wrenches, clamps and welding equipment

4. Strong construction skills – the fitter must be able to handle large pieces of metalwork or concrete on site

5. Good manual dexterity
