What is a Pipe Fitter?

A pipe fitter is a tradesman who installs, repairs and maintains pipes used in the water or gas industries. They may also work on steam systems, heating and cooling systems, drainage networks and other facilities that use piping. Pipefitters must have strong hands, good manual dexterity and knowledge of construction materials to be successful in this field.

What qualifications are required to become a Pipe Fitter?

A Pipe Fitter must have a high school diploma or equivalent, be able to read and understand blueprints and technical drawings, have good manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination, possess basic math skills including fractions and percentages, weld tubing by using TIG (torch/injector gas) welding techniques, know how to use pipe fittings properly.
