What is a Steel Fitter?

A Steel Fitter is a skilled tradesperson who assembles and fabricates metal products, including structural steelwork. They use hand tools and machines to cut, bend, shape and weld metal pieces into assemblies that meet the required specifications.

What qualifications are required to become a Steel Fitter?

1. A high school diploma or equivalent is required

2. Minimum of two years apprenticeship experience in steel fabrication is recommended

3. Must pass a National Steel Fitter examination (NCE) to be certified as a steel fitter

4. Familiarity with computer-aided design and drafting software tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, or Mastercam would be advantageous

5. Strong math skills are necessary for analyzing structural loads and calculating appropriate members sizes

What are the skills required to become a Steel Fitter?

1. Basic knowledge of mechanics and metalworking

2. Ability to read blueprints and understand engineering drawings

3. Experience working with steel structures or components

4. Working proficiency in a welding machine, MIG welder, gas torch or CNC milling machine

5. Strong attention to detail
