Repair, maintain and alter buildings, retaining walls and other brick or stone edifices. •Mix mortar, lay bricks and stones or concrete sidewalks and make and repair steps. •Patch and replace brick or stonework chimneys. •Install and repair tile floors or walls. •Read blueprints and plaster ceilings or walls.

What is a Block Mason?

A block mason is a skilled worker in the construction industry who specializes in blocks and mortar. Blocks are pieces of stone, often rectangular or square, that are used to build walls and other structures. Mortar is a type of concrete that is mixed with water and sand to form a soft paste which binds the blocks together when it's wetted down.

What qualifications are required to become a Block Mason?

1. A minimum of two years experience in masonry is required to become a Block Mason.

2. Must be able to read and understand blueprints and drawings accurately

3. Must have good hand-eye coordination

4. Must be competent with chisels, hammers, saws, sandpaper, trowel, leveler blocks and other necessary tools for the trade

5. must pass a written test

Job Summary: The Brick and Block Mason will use bricks, concrete blocks, and other stone materials to build walls, fences, and other structures. Supervisory Responsibilities: None. Duties/Responsibilities: Builds walls, fences, walkways, roads, and other structures using bricks, stone, concrete blocks, or marble. Carves out and builds structures and surfaces with bricks or concrete blocks. Places brick or concrete blocks on mortar bed. Cuts or saws bricks to fit around windows and doors. Measures distances to lay out work. Mixes mortar and grout to be used to lay brick. Spreads mortar onto brick or block surface with a trowel. Examines brickwork to ensure structure is built correctly. Performs other related duties as assigned. Required Skills/Abilities: Extensive knowledge of bricklaying techniques and procedures. Ability to read and interpret blueprints. Thorough understanding of math and geometry. Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent required. Technical/vocational school program preferred. Three years of related experience required. Physical Requirements: Prolonged periods of standing and working outside. Physically able to perform labor required to lay bricks and concrete blocks. Must be able to lift 50 pounds at a time. Excellent hand-eye coordination.
