What is a Gynecologist?

A Gynecologist is a doctor who specializes in women's health. He or she may perform gynecological exams, prescribe medications and treatments for gynecologic problems, provide reproductive counseling, and offer other services related to women's health.

What qualifications are required to become a Gynecologist?

The following qualifications are generally required to become a Gynecologist:

-A medical degree from an accredited college or university

-Two years of residency in OB/GYN, after which additional qualifying experience may be necessary

-Board certification by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG) is highly desired but not always mandatory for practice as aGynecologist. Other certifications such as the Canadian Certification Advisory Committee on Women's Health issues (CCACWHI) are also acceptable.

What are the skills required to become a Gynecologist?

- proficient in the use of medical instruments, such as stethoscopes and ultrasound machines

- knowledge of female reproductive anatomy and physiology

- experience performing gynecologic surgeries, including vaginoplasty (construction or reconstruction of a vagina) and hysterectomy (removal of the uterus), among others

- excellent communication skills, since consultations with patients can be lengthy
