What is a Head Chef?

A head chef is responsible for the overall operation of a restaurant. They are in charge of hiring and firing staff, setting prices, making menu choices, and ensuring that all food arrives on time and at the correct temperature. Head chefs also work closely with their owners to create unique menus that will appeal to customers.

What qualifications are required to become a Head Chef?

A person must have an undergraduate degree in culinary arts or related field, 3 years of professional cooking experience, and 2 year's experience leading a kitchen staff. Additional qualifications may include certification as a chef by the American Culinary Federation (ACF), Red Seal Chef designation from the Canadian Royal Institute of Chartered Cooks, or equivalent.
