What qualifications are required to become a Heavy Driver?

A. A heavy driver must have a valid Class B CDL with at least 6 months driving experience in the last 3 years.

B. Heavy drivers must be able to safely operate large commercial trucks and trailers over 25,000 lbs GVWR on public roads or highways in compliance with all applicable regulations and guidelines.

C. Heavy drivers must possess excellent knowledge of trucking routes, traffic patterns, loading/unloading procedures as well as safe operating practices specific to the type of cargo they are transporting (e.g., hazardous materials).

D. In order to qualify for hire by a freight carrier, heavy drivers generally require at least two years’ worth of verifiable safety-related experience working within a similar capacity (i .e., tractor trailer driver) including completing an accredited hazmat training program if required by their employer.(Note: Some carriers may accept less than two year's verified safety-related experience.)
