A heavy equipment mechanic is a technician who repairs and maintains large machines used in construction, agriculture, mining and manufacturing. They may work onsite as part of a crew or be stationed at a maintenance facility. A heavy equipment mechanic typically has an associate's degree or higher in engineering technology. They need strong technical skills and knowledge to repair complex machinery, identify malfunctions and correct them quickly. Many also have experience working with power tools and welding procedures.
1. A high school diploma or equivalent is required to become a heavy equipment mechanic.
2. Heavy equipment mechanics need good mechanical skills and knowledge of how various pieces of machinery work together.
3. Training programs that focus on hands-on experience with heavy machines are common routes to becoming a certified mechanic for heavy equipment operators.
