A Heavy Equipment Mechanic is a technician who services, repairs and maintains heavy equipment. They are responsible for keeping the equipment running smoothly and ensuring that it can be used safely. A Heavy Equipment Mechanic may also work on modifying or maintaining heavy machinery.
1. A high school diploma or equivalent is required for most positions as a heavy equipment mechanic.
2. Many Heavy Equipment Mechanic jobs require certification from the National Safety Council (NSC). This includes parts certification, machine operation and safety, welding and metal fabrication certifications.
3. Most Heavy Equipment Mechanics work in factories or on construction sites where they are responsible for repairing machines and keeping them operational by performing maintenance tasks such as oiling gears, checking bearings, adjusting valves, tightening bolts and troubleshooting problems with engines or transmissions
1. Strong mechanical skills, including wiring and repairing engines
2. Ability to read schematics and understand how equipment works
3. Experience operating heavy machinery such as bulldozers, tractors, backhoes, etc.
4. Valid driver's license with a good driving record
