What is a Heavy Equipment Mechanic?

A Heavy Equipment Mechanic is a technician who repairs and maintains heavy equipment. They may work on construction sites, manufacturing plants, or mines. A Heavy Equipment Mechanic typically has an associates degree in engineering technology or mechanical engineering.

What qualifications are required to become a Heavy Equipment Mechanic?

1. A high school diploma or equivalent is required.

2. Experience as a heavy equipment mechanic is preferred, but not necessary.

3. certification in Heavy Equipment Operations from an accredited training program may be required for employment with certain companies and/or positions classified as skilled trades occupations by the U.S Department of Labor (DOL).

4 Basic math skills are needed to understand diagrams and safety rules governing use of heavy equipment; knowledge of algebra would also be beneficial although not mandatory .

5 Good problem solving abilities are essential since repairs on large machines can often require disassembly and reassembly parts that must fit precisely together

What are the skills required to become a Heavy Equipment Mechanic?

1. Knowledge of mechanics and engineering principles involved in heavy equipment operation.

2. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and other technical drawings related to heavy equipment construction or repair.

3. Experience operating a variety of heavy machinery including bulldozers, backhoes, tractors, loaders/dump trucks etc..

4. Excellent problem-solving skills as well as manual dexterity required for working on high horsepower machines
