A heavy equipment mechanic is a technician who specializes in repairing, maintaining and operating large machinery. Typical duties include diagnosing and resolving mechanical problems; installing, adjusting or replacing parts; troubleshooting electrical issues; performing preventive maintenance procedures. A heavy equipment mechanic typically has training in both engineering and mechanics disciplines.
A heavy equipment mechanic typically needs a high school diploma or equivalent, two years of hands-on experience with large machinery, and proficiency in the use of common hand tools. Many employers also require certification from an accredited organization such as the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST).
The skills required to become a Heavy Equipment Mechanic include the ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, operate heavy machinery safely, use math formulas and estimations in calculations, be able to identify malfunctions in equipment and troubleshoot problems.
