A HVAC technician is a person who understands how to use heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. They may work for an organization that installs or repairs these systems, or they may be self-employed. A typical job duties of a HVAC technician include inspecting equipment, diagnosing problems and making recommendations on how to fix them, installing new insulation or ductwork, performing maintenance tasks such as cleaning filters and changing oil levels in machinery, troubleshooting code issues with the system's control panels and more.
A. The minimum qualifications for a HVAC technician are an associate's degree in air conditioning or heating, and two years of experience.
B. Some state licensing requirements may be necessary to become a HVAC technician, such as certification from the National Air Conditioning Contractors Association (NACC).
C. A knowledge of refrigeration principles is essential for becoming a good HVAC technician; this includes understanding how compressors work and sizing them properly based on room size and needs.
