A HVAC technician is a professional who installs, maintains and repairs heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. They may also be called upon to troubleshoot problems with the system. A HVAC technician typically has a high school diploma or equivalent, but many have degrees in engineering or other technical fields as well.
A person who wants to become a HVAC technician must have an associate's degree or technical certificate in heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning from an accredited institution. They also need two years of experience working with cooling systems and three years of experience working with heating systems. Finally, they must pass the National Air Conditioning Technicians Association (NACTA) Basic Qualification Exam.
1. Knowledge of HVAC systems and how to operate them
2. Experience installing, servicing, or repairing HVAC equipment
3. Thorough understanding of safety protocols for working withHVAC systems
4. Ability to troubleshoot problems associated with HVAC systems
5. Excellent communication and customer service skills
