What is a HVAC Technician?

A HVAC technician repairs, installs, and maintains heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC) systems. They also inspects the system for problems and recommends necessary repairs or replacements. A typical career path for a HVAC technician includes becoming certified as an Air Conditioning Service Technician or Mechanical Contractor by one of several certification organizations such as The National Board of Testing & Certification (NBTCC), American Society of Heating, Refrigeration & Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), Canadian Association Of Professional Engineering Companies(CAPEC).

What qualifications are required to become a HVAC Technician?

A. A high school diploma or equivalent is required.

B. Experience as a HVAC technician, maintenance worker, or system administrator is necessary.

C. Must be able to read and understand mechanical drawings and schematics of heating and cooling systems in order to diagnose malfunctions and correct them properly.

D. Familiarity with computersized programs that can analyze data from various instruments used in the diagnosis of HVAC problems is desirable but not mandatory for this career field; some training may be available through schools or employers on-the-job).

E Professional certification such as an Air Conditioning Contractor License (ABCL) from the National Institute for Standards & Technology (NIST) are often required by employers prior to hiring entry level technicians
