What is a HVAC Technician?

A HVAC technician is someone who installs, services and repairs heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems in residences and commercial buildings. They may also work with gas appliances such as furnaces or boilers. A typical career path for a HVAC technician includes working on one project or assignment after another until they reach the level of experience where they can start specializing in certain areas of the trade. Some common positions a HVAC technician might hold include apprentice, journeyman, master mechanic and certified professional engineer.

What qualifications are required to become a HVAC Technician?

1. A high school diploma or equivalent is required, and a valid state driver’s license is also recommended.

2. Basic mechanical abilities are necessary for installation, repair and maintenance of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.

3. Some experience working with HVAC components may be helpful but isn't mandatory; many academies offer on-the-job training programs that teach the basics of HVAC system design as well as how to work various tools and machines used in the trade industry.

4 Certifications such as those offered by National Board Of Refrigeration Technology (NBFRT) or American Society Of Heating And Refrigeration Engineers (ASHRE) can give technicians added credibility when applying for jobs or providing consultation services to clients/customers.</strong>

5 Technicians must have strong problem solving skills because they will often find themselves needing to diagnose problems caused by malfunctioning equipment before proceeding with repairs/installations.</p>
