What is a Marine Electrical Technician?

A Marine Electrical Technician is a technician who repairs and maintains electrical systems on marine vessels. They may work in the engine room, communications center, or other areas of the ship that require extensive electrical wiring. A Marine Electrician's duties also include maintaining ladders, rigging and antennas.

What qualifications are required to become a Marine Electrical Technician?

1. A minimum of an associate degree in electrical engineering or a related field is required.

2. Candidates must have experience working with electricity and electronics, be able to read and understand technical manuals, and have good problem-solving skills.

3. Prior marine industry experience is preferred but not mandatory; candidates who lack maritime experience can train on the job as long as they meet all other qualifications listed above.

4. Certification from one of several professional organizations specializing in Marine Electrical Technology may be desired by some employers (e g., IAEI).
