What is a Mechanical Technician?

A Mechanical Technician is a technician who specializes in working with machines and equipment. They may work on vehicles, aircraft, industrial machinery or tools. Some duties of a mechanical technician include troubleshooting and repairing machines; installing new parts; calibrating instruments; maintaining records and logs related to machine operations; teaching others about how to use the machines.

What qualifications are required to become a Mechanical Technician?

The mechanical technician must have a high school diploma or equivalent and pass both the National Mechanical Technician Examination (NMTE) and an accredited apprenticeship program. Many employers also require certification from either the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) or the National Board of Certification in Engineering Technologies (NBCET).
