What is a Mechanical Technician?

A Mechanical Technician is a technician who specializes in the maintenance, repair and installation of mechanical equipment. They may work on everything from air conditioners to engines.

What qualifications are required to become a Mechanical Technician?

1. A high school diploma or equivalent is required.

2. Experience in a hands-on mechanical position is preferred, but not necessary.

3. Certifications may be required for some positions such as: National Mechanical Technician Certification Board (NMTCB) certification, Journeyman Electrician Certificate from the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA), or registered apprenticeship with one of several trade organizations such as The Plumbers and Pipefitters Union Local #460; member companies are usually willing to recognize certifications earned through their training program even if they are not NMTCB certified professionals themselves.<br />4. Abilities to read schematics, understand diagrams, use hand tools and know how to operate power equipment.<br /><strong>5.</strong> Work ethic and good communication skills are essential because technicians work both independently and team oriented
