What is a Quantity Surveyor?

A quantity surveyor is a professional who specializes in estimating the quantities of materials and products required for construction or renovation projects. They use mathematical formulas and surveys to determine how much material will be needed, what type of materials are necessary, and at what cost.

What qualifications are required to become a Quantity Surveyor?

1. A Bachelor's degree in Quantity Surveying or a related field is required.

2. Must have at least 2 years of experience as a drafter, estimator, or engineer within the construction industry prior to pursuing certification as a professional quantity surveyor (PQS).

3. PQS certification requires passing an examination administered by the American Association of Professional Surveyors (AAPS).

4. In order to be certified, you must also hold membership in AAPS and meet specific education requirements set forth by the organization.

5. The ability to work independently with little supervision is essential for becoming a successful quantity surveyor

What are the skills required to become a Quantity Surveyor?

1. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications

2. Knowledge of mathematics including trigonometry and calculus

3. Experience in construction or surveying field is helpful but not required

4. Strong communication skills - must be able to effectively communicate with clients, architects, engineers, subcontractors etc., throughout the project lifecycle

5. Proven experience as a Quantity Surveyor is preferred
