1. Do your research and find an activist who meets the qualifications you are looking for. Many activists have experience working with social movements, which can give them a good foundation to work with in Ohrid. However, not all activists will be suited to every position or project - so do your diligence before making any hires!
2. Consider setting up a formal interview process to assess whether potential employees would fit well into the culture of your organization and share ideas that align with your mission/vision. This way, you can make sure that everyone is on the same page when it comes to what you stand for as an organization; this also helps avoid potential conflicts down the line (and yes, there WILL be conflicts!).
3. Offer compensation commensurate with experience and skillset - activism often requires significant time and effort from both volunteers AND Paid Staff members alike! Be transparent about pay rates upfront so there are no surprises later on during employment negotiations...or worse yet-accusations of unfairness or nepotism! Keep in mind too that some people may choose NOT TO take paid positions if they feel their volunteer hours don't reflect adequately in their income bracket (which is completely understandable). Again: offer fairpay but respect employee autonomy by letting them know what's expected BEFORE hand ;)
4. Communicate openly & honestly throughout all stages of recruitment/hiring- even after someone has been hired!! Activist should always feel like they're part of a team where decisions are made collectively&everyone knows their role within said team...NOT just "the boss" :) There's nothing more demoralizing than feeling isolated or misunderstood at work (& believe me I've seen it happen plenty...) ;-) So please keep communication open while respecting confidentiality whenever possible ;) 5 . Create opportunities for training & development – many times new staff members join organizations without having had previous involvement in movement oriented work tasks such as organizing protests etc.. Providing ample opportunity for education & skill building ensures that everyone involved feels appreciated…not left behind :-)
