A civil engineer is a professional who helps design and oversee construction projects. They typically have degrees in engineering or architecture, and may work as consultants or on staff for government agencies, private companies, or individual clients. Civil engineers are responsible for everything from planning and designing structures to overseeing the actual construction process.
A civil engineer must have a degree in engineering or a related field. They must also pass the Professional Engineers Exam (PE). In addition, they may need certification from the National Board of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NBES).
1. Ability to read and understand maps, drawings, plans and specifications
2. Excellent problem solving skills
3. Knowledge of structural engineering principles and methods
4. Experience in use of computer-aided design software programs such as AutoCAD or CAD/ CAM packages
5. Good communication and interpersonal skills
