The Department of Defense (DoD) requires that all individuals seeking to be hired as a commissioned officer in the U.S. military must have a college degree from an accredited institution of higher education, and pass the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test (ASVAB). The Marine Corps has specific requirements for officers who wish to serve aboard United States Navy ships: they must hold at least a bachelor's degree with majoring in mathematics or engineering, plus three years' experience working on shipboard as an engineer corpsman or equivalent position. In order to qualify for service as an officer aboard United States Coast Guard vessels, applicants must also possess at least a four-year university degree with majored in marine science or coastal navigation; however no prior work experience is required.
